Audience Q&A at 2018 Taichung Int'l Animation Festival
The awarding-winning animated short "The Wayward Kite" was screened at 2018 Taichung Int'l Animation Festival(TIAF) on October 12th. Director Yuting Hsueh took part in the screening, giving a humbled, grateful solo Q&A with the moderator Zoë C.J. Chen(陳俊蓉), receiving solemn ovation from the audience at Showtime Cinemas S2 in Taiching, Taiwan.
"The Wayward Kite" is an 8-min computer animated short, writen and directed by Yuting Hsueh in 2017. The film won the 1st Place Award in the competiton of Professional Film: Experimental at 2017 World Animation Celebration that presented by Animation Libation Studios and Animation Magazine, hosted by Sony Pictures Animation in Culver City, California.
This is the second time Yuting's film was selected at TIAF. His last film "Cash Testing" won Special Mention Award at 2016 TIAF. "To me, the priority in respect to film arts is storytelling" said by the director. Instead of experimental narrative style from his last film, Yuting chooses a traditional way in narrative this time that is event-driven, character-centered with dramatic cuve of beginning, middle, and the end. However, the director still pushes the boundary of storytelling by choosing the protagonist that has no face and limbs. There is no dialogues nor facial features/expressions, but only the compelling acting of flight attitude to render the emotions and the desires of the kite. The other screen of "The Wayward Kite" will be at 21:10 on Monday, October 15th at Showtime Cinemas S2.
Yuting Hsueh is also an assistant professor, teaching computer animation in Taiwan's Chinese Culture University(文化大學) and an adjunct in Taipei National University of the Arts(台北藝術大學), maintaining an active production profile in independent and commissioned.
